But if the vehicle does not match your purpose, needs unexpected repairs, is difficult to maintain in your country, or creates higher costs after arrival, that low price may not be a saving at all.

I am Yuichiro Watabe, President and CEO of EVERY TRADING Co., Ltd. Since 2006, we have supported customers in more than 100 countries with Japanese used vehicles, including trucks, cars, buses, farm tractors, and machinery.

In this article, I want to explain how I think overseas buyers should look beyond the initial price and judge the real value of a used vehicle from Japan.

Cheap Price and Good Value Are Not the Same

Price is easy to compare.

You can put two vehicles next to each other and immediately see which one costs less.

Value is more complicated.

To understand value, you need to ask what you are receiving for the money and what the vehicle will cost you after the purchase.

Imagine two similar Japanese used trucks. One is cheaper, but it has higher wear, an unsuitable body specification, or an engine that is difficult to support in your country. The other costs more initially but better matches your work and local maintenance environment.

Which one is really cheaper after one or two years of operation?

This is why I do not think the lowest number on a quotation should automatically decide the purchase.

Start with the Purpose, Not the Price

Before comparing prices, first decide what you actually need the vehicle to do.

A Japanese used car for personal transportation has different requirements from a truck that needs to earn income every day. A bus carrying passengers has different priorities from a farm tractor or construction machine.

For a commercial truck, for example, the buyer may need to consider:

Payload and cargo requirements

Body type

Engine and transmission

2WD or 4WD

Road conditions

Daily operating distance

Parts availability

Local maintenance capability

A cheaper truck with the wrong specification can become an expensive mistake.

That is why I prefer to start with the customer’s work and then search for vehicles that match it.

If you are comparing commercial vehicles, you can browse our current Japanese Used Trucks for Sale and compare the different specifications available in Japan.

Vehicle Condition Is Part of the Value

Every used vehicle is different.

Year and mileage are useful information, but they do not tell the complete story.

Buyers should review the available photographs, specifications, condition information, and other details for the individual vehicle.

For working vehicles, I believe it is especially important to focus on the parts that affect the job.

A small cosmetic scratch may have little effect on the value of a commercial truck. On the other hand, an unsuitable body, serious mechanical problem, or specification that does not fit the customer’s operation can matter much more.

This is why “good condition” should not simply mean “looks clean.”

Condition needs to be considered together with the purpose of the vehicle.

Think About Maintenance After the Vehicle Arrives

One question I believe buyers should ask is: “Can I maintain this vehicle in my country?”

This is particularly important for trucks, buses, tractors, and machinery that are expected to work regularly.

Consider whether mechanics are familiar with the model or engine. Check whether normal service parts are available. Think about the technology and systems used in the vehicle.

A very low purchase price loses its advantage quickly if the vehicle spends too much time waiting for repairs or difficult-to-find parts.

Good value should include the ability to keep the vehicle working.

Do Not Forget Shipping and Import Costs

For an overseas buyer, the vehicle price is only one part of the financial decision.

Depending on the quotation and destination, other costs may include:

Ocean freight

Marine insurance

Required inspection costs

Import duties and taxes

Customs clearance

Port charges

Inland transportation

Registration or compliance costs

This is why buyers should understand whether a quotation is based on FOB, C&F, CIF, or another agreed condition.

For example, C&F includes freight from Japan to the destination port, while CIF also includes insurance. Local customs duty, clearing costs, and forwarding costs are separate under the purchasing information currently provided by EVERYCAR.jp.

Our How to Buy from Japan guide explains the basic quotation, payment, shipping, documentation, and clearing process.

The Cheapest Vehicle Can Become Expensive

This is the point I want buyers to remember most.

A cheap purchase can become expensive later.

Imagine saving money on the purchase but then discovering that:

The vehicle needs significant repairs

The body type does not suit your business

Parts are difficult to obtain locally

The vehicle does not meet import requirements

The specification is unsuitable for local roads

Unexpected destination costs were not included in your calculation

In each case, the original purchase price may have been low, but the overall value was poor.

This does not mean buyers should always choose the most expensive vehicle.

Paying more does not automatically guarantee better value either.

The objective is to find the best balance between price, condition, specification, operating requirements, and total cost.

Good Value Is Different for Every Customer

There is no single vehicle that represents the best value for everyone.

A logistics company may prioritize reliability and payload. A small business may prioritize fuel economy and easy maintenance. A farmer may care more about 4WD capability and local parts availability. A passenger transport operator may focus on seating capacity and operating costs.

The country also matters.

Road conditions, fuel, mechanics, spare parts, import regulations, taxes, and shipping routes differ from market to market.

This is why I believe vehicle exporting should involve communication, not simply showing a customer a price list.

We need to understand where the vehicle will go and what the customer expects it to do.

Value Also Depends on Who You Buy From

There is another part of value that cannot be seen in the vehicle price.

It is the support behind the transaction.

When you buy internationally, you need accurate vehicle information, clear communication, correct documents, shipping arrangements, and someone who responds when you have a question.

A very cheap offer is not necessarily good value if important information is unclear or support disappears after payment.

For me, trust is part of the value of an international transaction.

EVERY TRADING has worked with overseas customers since 2006. Over those years, I have learned that customers remember not only what they paid, but also how they were supported throughout the purchase and export process.

How I Think About the Right Value

When comparing vehicles, I recommend asking five simple questions:

Does this vehicle fit what I actually need it to do?

Is its condition reasonable for the price?

Can I maintain and repair it in my country?

Do I understand the total cost, not just the vehicle price?

Am I buying through a company that can support the international transaction?

If the answers make sense together, you are much closer to understanding the real value of the vehicle.

Right Vehicle. Right Value. Right Support.

At EVERY, we do not believe that “cheap” and “good value” always mean the same thing.

Sometimes a lower-priced vehicle really is the right choice. Sometimes paying a little more for the correct specification or better overall condition can create much greater value over time.

The important thing is understanding the difference.

That is why our approach comes back to three ideas:

Right Vehicle. Right Value. Right Support.

The Right Vehicle should fit the customer’s actual purpose and country. The Right Value should consider more than the initial price. And the Right Support should help the customer understand the vehicle and the international buying process.

Our goal is not simply to help customers buy something cheaply from Japan.

Our goal is to help them make a purchase that still makes sense after the vehicle arrives and starts working.

For me, that is the difference between a cheap price and good value.

Yuichiro Watabe
President & CEO
EVERY TRADING Co., Ltd.

Browse Reliable Used Trucks & Buses from Japan

Carefully selected vehicles ready for export worldwide

Search 100,000+ Dealer Stock Vehicles from Japan

Access a wide selection of vehicles from Japanese dealers nationwide.
