Nishiki-koi is said to be a "swimming jewel" because of its beauty and elegant appearance, and is widely loved both at home and abroad. In recent years, it has become particularly popular overseas, and about 80% of the carp produced in Japan is exported overseas.

Some Nishiki-koi, which are considered to be "symbols of wealth" in Asia, are traded at very high prices. Nishiki-koi is a delicate creature, so you need to be careful when handling it so as not to put stress on it during transportation.
Originally bred for food in the mountains of the Chuetsu region of Niigata prefecture, the carp has been reborn as a high-class ornamental fish and has become loved around the world, especially in Europe and the United States.
Niigata Prefecture has the largest share of Nishikigoi production in Japan, and Niigata's Nishikigoi production is characterized by "high variety, small quantity, high unit price" against the background of mating, sorting, and breeding techniques cultivated over a long history. .. Producers are always looking to produce better Nishikigoi.
It was not until the beginning of the 21st century that overseas exports surged. According to the Ministry of Finance's trade statistics, the export value of ornamental fish such as Nishiki-koi, excluding goldfish, was about 1 billion yen until around 2000, but in 2019 it has increased nearly five times to 4.72 billion yen. Due to the popularity of "Nishikigoi" in Europe, the United States and Asia, the Japanese word "Koi" refers to Nishikigoi, which is different from the English word "Carp".
Niigata Prefecture is the birthplace of Nishikigoi, and is still Japan's largest producer with more than 300 carp growers. The Niigata Nishikigoi Fair, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2020, boasts one of the largest scales in the world, with 82 vendors exhibiting a total of 753 fish. Due to the Korona-ka, the number of participants from overseas was small, but it is said that more than 1000 buyers and enthusiasts gather every year. It is not uncommon for the winning Nishiki-koi to be priced at tens of millions of yen, and many general visitors come to see such high-class fish at a glance.
