SUBARU / Boxer Engine (Horizontally-opposed cylinder engine)
The Horizontally-opposed cylinder engine has cylinders on right & left side of the engine horizontally, and a crank shaft is put between them. Right and left side pistons move opposite for each. The engine is called a Boxer engine because the motion of these pistons look like a boxer beats his groves together.
One of the strong points of the engine is few vibration. A boxer engine which has more than 4 cylinders offsets vibrations with own vibrations. So the engine revolution is very smooth, and the engine sound is a little different with other reciprocating engines that move their pistons up and down. Boxer engine fan like it and call the sound "Boxer sound".
Another strong point is the engine shape. A boxer engine has low, wide body. The engine room should be lower because of air resistance though the width of the engine room can't be shorter than the width of a cabin. So the shape of the engine can be said it's suitable for an engine room of vehicle basically.
Now only Subaru have adopted a boxer engine for their cars in Japanese car makers. Compare with other reciprocating engines when you drive Subaru cars.
